Gooood morning! (Or afternoon, night, whenever you happen to be reading this!)
Isn’t it fun when your friends start having kiddos?
I feel like so many people around my are pregnant or having little babes and it is such an exciting time! I am just at that age. There is the age where everyone around you is getting married and then there is the age when everyone is having kids! It is definitely that season and it is so fun watching everyone’s new adventure start.
On Sunday I got to do Bobby and my really good friends’ newborn session, and it is was super special. It is just so sweet seeing your friends become first time parents, because you never know that side of them! It is just another side and a different layer of their personality that you get to see and it is great.
Being in the middle of this baby season I thought it would be appropriate to share my tips on preparing for your newborn session! These are tips that I like to send out before each session just to help take some of the thinking out of the session.
Without further ado…
Preparing your home!
Clean, declutter, but don’t stress! I love “lived-in” homes, but the reality is that you don’t want anything too distracting in your images. You also don’t want to hide all of the things that make your home “homey” and you! Whatever that looks like for you is perfect. The main areas I will usually focus on during a newborn session are the master bedroom, the nursery (if it is ready), the living room, and every once in awhile the kitchen, just so you have an idea of the places to focus on when you are preparing! If you need any help at all, always feel free to reach out, send me photos, ask questions, whatever you need, I am here for you!
Shut off all artificial lights in or around the areas we will be taking photos in! This includes lamps, bathroom lights, overhead lighting, any lights! This is because the artificial light and natural light clash and creates an odd mixture of light temperatures in your photos! We don’t want that!
When thinking about bedding, white is always a perfect go-to! It is clean and bright, and provides a perfect canvas to add anything if we want to! Which brings me to my next tip! Having a throw blanket or two can be an easy way to create a nice cozy feel in the photos as well as variety! Keeping a couple swaddles near by is great for this as well! Another fun option to keep close by is a stuffed animal!
What to wear!
I absolutely love neutrals and earth tones, and I absolutely want you to be 100% comfortable! When you are picking out outfits you definitely want to coordinate so your outfits look nice together as a whole, but without being too matchy-matchy. I suggest starting with Mom and coordinating from there! For baby, a simple onesie is perfect and/or I love just a diaper on to see all those sweet details. I want your session to represent you and your family as much as possibly, so you want to pick out something that feels good and that you aren’t second guessing. Before your session, feel free to send me photos and ideas and I will be happy to give you wardrobe advice.
Keep baby awake!
Please interact with your little babe as much as possible to keep him/her awake for at least one hour before I arrive to your home to ensure he/she is nice and sleepy when I arrive. Without this, we may spend more time getting the baby to fall asleep and less time photographing him/her. Try giving him/her a bath or play with him/her to keep them awake.
Make sure your little one has a full belly!
This just helps us start on time and makes sure your cutie pie is comfortable before we start our session!
Make it comfy!
Making sure your little one is comfy and relaxed is my main goal for the session! Feel free to put on a sound machine if you’d like, and also think about the temperature in the rooms that we will be shooting in! A nice warm room (80-82 degrees) is perfect!
Don’t worry, I am prepared for feedings and diaper changes!
At anytime during the session you or your little one need a break, whether it is feeding, diaper changes, outfit changes, or anything else, just let me know! I have prepared and factored that into the timing of your session!
I hope you these tips help you a bit when you are preparing for your newborn session! Have a wonderful day!
