Getting ready for a session is the hardest part isn’t it?
There are so many things to think of and to sort out before you actually get to the session. I feel like the session is the easy and fun part, knowing what to do beforehand can get overwhelming! So! I have created a Pre-Session Family Checklist just for you! The one I am sharing today is all about Family Sessions. I have actually created another just for Newborn Sessions and another just for Cake Smash sessions, which I will definitely have to share another time! I am excited because I am also going to be sending these out to anyone who books with me, and you will actually get to click the boxes and check off specific things so you know that you have everything taken care of and are ready for a fun, stress-free session!
Alrighty! Here we go!
1. Sign your contract and take care of your retainer
These two steps are going to secure your spot on the schedule so no one else can snag your spot, so this is definitely the first step you want to take before you dive into everything else!
2. Start thinking about the perfect location!
If you have a location in mind, or a couple, send your ideas my way! If you don’t have a location in mind, that is 100% okay! I would love to go over suggestions to find the perfect fit for you! If you are on Instagram I have created a story highlight that goes over tons of my favorite locations, definitely check that out.
3. Start planning your outfits!
THIS is the hardest part. And I know it is! I have something in the works that is going to help you a ton in this department! I can’t wait! For now, click here to check out my blog on “What the heck should I wear?” and also if you click here, you will get access to all of the Pinterest boards I curated with tons of fun ideas for outfits and more!
4. If you are planning on getting your hair and make-up done professionally, book those now!
It is 100% optional to get hair and make-up done professionally, but if you are choosing to do so, you’ll want to book as far out in advance as possible to make sure they have your date available! I am putting together a vendor list of people I love, so you have a place to start if this is something you want to do!
1-2 Days Before Your Session
1. Finalize and GPS your session location!
Now is the time to completely decide on the location that you love and want as the backdrop for your session! Once we do that, I always think it is a good idea to stick the location in your GPS so you know exactly how to get there and about how much time it will take! This just helps you prepare ahead of time so you are less stressed on the day of your family session!
2. Finalize your outfit choices
You’ll want to make sure that everyone’s outfits are picked out and ready to go! This way, when the day comes you are not scrambling around going through your closet, not knowing what to wear. I think it is a good idea to lay everything out the day before like your first day of school is coming up!
3. Finish filling out your “Getting to Know You!” questionnaire
When you book, one of the forms I send over is a “Getting to Know You!” questionnaire! This just helps me gather some extra information for your file, get to know you a bit more, and learn about your vision for your session!
4. Pack up everything you are bringing to your session
At the bottom of this post, I will list a few ideas on extras to bring to the session! Pack everything up in a bag and put it by your front door so it is ready to grab and throw into the car on your way out!
5. Ask me any last-minute questions
Feel free to send me an email anytime with any questions you have or if I can help you with any of the steps! I want to make this as easy and stress-free as possible, so just let me know how I can make that happen for you!
1. Have a relaxing day!
Make a day out of your session! Try to relax, get a good night’s sleep, have fun with your kiddos, make plenty of time to get ready, eat some yummy food, whatever that looks like for you!
2. Arrive at your session early!
Plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early to your location to give yourself enough time to find parking, get little ones out of the car seat, do any last-minute things that you need to do to get ready, all of that jazz! Also, a lot of my sessions are done around sunset, which is also rush hour, so be sure to keep in mind that it may take a bit longer than usual to get to your location! The less stress the better!
3. Blast some good tunes on the way over!
Music always gets me in a good mood! Blast your favorite playlist, belt out a few songs together, and bring that fun energy into your session!
4. Have a snack!
Always have a snack before your start time! This goes for the whole family! You don’t want everyone to be full and uncomfortable but you don’t want anyone to be hangry either!
5. Last-minute things to remember:
Take off hair ties from your wrist
Take off sunglasses
Make sure Dad takes his wallet and keys out of his pocket
Leave any extras you don’t need or don’t want in the photos either in your car or purse!
